WSWS editor Johannes Stern discusses imprisoned Ukrainian socialist Bogdan Syrotiuk on Spain’s Canal Red

Bogdan Syrotiuk, a jailed communist in Ukraine

Canal Red, the Spanish-language channel founded by Pablo Iglesias, the former leader of Podemos and former deputy prime minister of Spain, has broadcast an interview with WSWS editor Johannes Stern about the case of Bogdan Syrotiuk, the young Ukrainian socialist sentenced to 15 years in prison for opposing the war. The interview premiered November 5 on the program Balaklava. It also takes up the rearmament of Europe and the silencing of anti-war opposition.

Bogdan, 27, is a leader of the Young Guard of Bolshevik-Leninists. The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) arrested him at his home on April 25, 2024, and charged him with “high treason under martial law.” On August 10, 2026, the Pervomaisk City District Court sentenced him to 15 years in prison and ordered his property confiscated. The only evidence against him was six anti-war articles he wrote for the World Socialist Web Site. His lawyers have appealed.

Stern is the editor of the German-language World Socialist Web Site and a leading member of the Sozialistische Gleichheitspartei (Socialist Equality Party) in Germany.

The interview is in English, and the rest of the program is in Spanish. To get translated subtitles, open the video’s settings (the gear icon), choose Subtitles/CC, then Auto-translate and your language.
