Without a rank-and-file rebellion by doctors against the RDC, a sellout was inevitable. That is the central lesson from the dispute. Doctors showed their willingness to fight, but their struggle was undermined by the absence of an organised opposition to the BMA’s partnership with the government.
The RDC leadership, headed by Dr. Jack Fletcher, called off the walkout before members had any opportunity to examine the proposed agreement. Doctors were informed by email on Saturday evening, barely 24 hours before the scheduled strike action and only provided highlights.
As a matter of principle, no offer should be used to call off mandated strike action before British Medical Association members have been given time to scrutinise its contents and determine whether it meets their demands.
